The way a guitar feels and sounds, directly affects the way a guitarist performs a piece of music. It is the link between the hands, mind, heart and the music he feels and hears in his minds eye. Varied types of equipment choices affect how a guitar sounds so I have chosen a wide variety on my guitars.

I find it difficult to find an "off the shelf" guitar that does what I want or need.
I  favor customizing or modifying them in order to bring out their full potential. Guitars should not only play well, but sound good. The type of wood, pickups, bridge, frets, and electronics all affect the tone that is produced.

I have guitars with many different configurations, so that I am able to produce the greatest variety of tones possible. Tones are the a great part of the musicians choice of "colors", in which to "paint" a soundscape. I am not really partial to any particular configuration or the other, nor am I really partial to any type of guitar to the other, (except to say that a Les Paul is my favorite guitar, which oddly enough I do not presently own, although that is next on my acquisition list). I do however demand the highest quality in my instruments and have gone through many guitars over the years in order to be able to have those that let me reproduce the great number of tones and timbres required to play music the way I like. I think a scalloped neck the best, and anticipate making that modification to several of my current guitars soon, as well as acquiring new ones with that feature.

My guitars have different sized necks, frets, types and makes of pickups and electronics, bridges, whammy bars and so on. Each is special to me in its own unique way and they are all set up different. Different string heights, bridge setups, etc in order for me to have the widest range of tonal possibilities that I can. Therefore I am able to play just about any types of music that I can, and reproduce just about any type of sound that I want; Tele, Strat, Les Paul, hod rodded, or anything I hear in my head.

In addition, I have also designed 3 different guitars, and  am in the final stages of drawing up the final plans in order to have them built. Once I have gone through a couple of prototypes each, I will market them, on a limited basis. I will make details concerning them available as I can, here on www.perran.com.

Each one of my guitars has its own personality, so I name them in order to form a closer psychological relationship with them. Below you will find descriptions of my guitars and an image selector in order to view each piece.

This is a USA Custom Shop Jackson . As far as I know, this is a one of a kind guitar. It has an EXPLOSIVE,  LIGHTNING FAST neck! I do not perform live on stage with this piece, because it is irreplaceable. I use this as my main  recording guitar, and I may occasionally use this when shooting videos in a controlled environment. It is affectionately called "LAVA" and was  named by the very good friend who got this for me. It has a very rich tone, and has tons of brilliant midrange. It is definitely a screaming guitar, built to shred! The Floyd Rose is set to cricket/ flutter indefinitely. When pulling back on the bar, it has a range of almost an octave on the "G" string ! It even sounds good when playing with a clean tone. In one word: devastating!

7. GHS Boomer .09's
This is a 100% custom prototype guitar designed by myself and Jessie (one of the Luthiers for  the world famous Warrior Instruments ) back in 1999.  I will be having one made for me by Warrior soon. It features a deep scalloped neck and  a unique body style designed for balance, comfort  and style. Although it is not an actual Warrior Guitar, it is nonetheless an exceptional instrument that originally came from some model of Ibanez although very little is left from the original. It has a powerful and growling tone, great for shredding or smooth sounds when tamed down. I have never heard another guitar sound like this. Most people can't play it because of the scalloped neck.

This is a guitar Peavey made several years ago and really surprised me so much that I originally recommended this to my very dear  friend, Jeff Walker, and he bought it. After he acquired some other guitars he gave it to me at a steal  because he knew I liked it so much. It has a big fat tone with a smooth and warm low end, yet still has clear highs. The neck is quite comfortable, very different from all of the other Peavey guitars I have seen. It is perfectly suited for rock, jazz, blues or just about anything else you can think of, and has a beautiful singing lead tone. When played clean its very warm and clear.

Karen is an 80's model Charvel (Model 3?) that my wife bought me for a birthday present. I think of it as a workhorse version of the LAVA  because it plays and sounds really similar to the LAVA. We found this at a local music store for almost nothing. Although the body/neck is almost perfect, the hardware and set-up were in pretty bad shape. After some extensive work, it really turned out to be amazing. A truly brutal tone, with lots of midrange, this guitar is devastating in terms of playability and tone. A very fast neck and a wide variety of timbers epitomizes this perfect stage guitar. Capable of taking lots of abuse.

This is a Limited Edition BC Rich custom-shop Mockingbird: #40 of only 100 made to celebrate NAMM's 100th anniversary. Very nice red flametop w/ gold hardware, binding on the neck,  body & headstock, cloud inlays and a commemorative seal on the headstock. This guitar is very Les Paul like. Very impressive instrument. Big, thick, meaty tone suitable for any kind of music. Extremely versatile. When distorted it has a warm and fluid timbre  with plenty of attack and a nice chunky and powerful rhythm sound  as well. When utilizing a clean tone, is very bell like and clear. A true one of a kind instrument..

This is a custom Blade RH-4 hand built in Switzerland by the renowned Gary Levinson. He approaches guitar building from an analytical standpoint: Inherent resonant frequencies of woods, innovative electronics, position-determined-profile neck and the tonal effect of hardware designs are important factors. This is simply one of the finest guitars I have ever owned. He custom makes his pickups & hardware and it shows. The quality and uniqueness of tone make this one of my prized guitars. I use this guitar allot on everything From Shred to Smooth Jazz and ballads. Clear and punchy mids make the tone really growl and standout. Plays like butter. Comfortable, low action.

It took me years to find an acoustic guitar that I really liked, and this is it, a  Guild Madeira A-20M. Sounds really amazing. It's inspired a lot of songs so I call it Melody. Of course it has been customized. The finish has been stripped off of the front of the body and the pickguard has been removed, along with some other secret modifications. I have no idea how old it is, although I suspect it is a late 70's model. Very rich deep and tight lows, an even midrange, and a bright, smooth high end. Doesn't sound brittle or dull like most acoustics. I use an old  Bill Lawrence sound-hole pickup and it sounds really natural. Its relative position is adjustable, so I can get a wide variety of tones out it.

This is a stock Copley CBE-56SN Five  String Bass with active pickups and a preamp . This  is a very versatile instrument and is the best sounding and playing Bass I have ever owned. It is perfect for that punchy funky characteristic so many of us look for. It has a very clear and bell like sound with tone for days. I especially like the balance control. When used in conjunction with the active Bass and Treble controls this bass can get a very wide range of timbres perfect for studio or live work. This is an exceptionally constructed instrument and is quite beautiful to boot. There are no dead spots on the neck, and the tension on the low B string is taunt, tight and really makes the low B thump.
