The music available here by no means represents what I am looking to do in a band context. This was a musical experiment!!! I recorded these songs when I was without a band and bored. They in no way represent the band "Kung Fu Cricket", the band "Perran" or the range of styles I am capable of writing. |

Wouldn't You Like This song is very different in a lot of respects. It is heavily layered with lots of little things that aren't apparent upon first listening. I took a very different approach to this piece. In terms of the writing and arranging I took a classical orchestral approach, although not in terms of chordal or melodic development... more in terms of how the parts were arranged and layered. I would classify this song as a progressive Hard Rock/ Electronica type of song, but that doesn't really describe it either. You listen and be the judge, and by all means submit your opinions and observations to me. This song is related to "Get Wild (In My Dreams) in that it represents a whole spectrum of emotions and mental states while dealing with a lost love, but a completely different mindset. It's not so much a journey through any of my dreams or nightmares, as much as it is a journey through my mental and emotional perspective. It represents a journey of those feelings we hide from people: the pain, the loneliness, the melancholy happiness and the emptiness this lost love gives us at different times of our days, and our lives. First I will discuss the approach to the Bass lines. They consist of 3 electronically produced parts and one track of Bass Guitar. I wanted a combination of the sterile digital sounding synth, a warmer analog synth, a full bodied Bass Synth sound and a clear an punchy Bass Guitar. I purposefully avoided the typical Electronic Bass Sounds of today's modern music. I made the synth lines tight with each other while the Bass Guitar drifts somewhat in the pocket, both ever so slightly behind and ahead of the rest of the Bass parts. This helps to build tension and change the feel of the pocket. At times the Bass Guitar lags slightly with the synth lines in order to produce a more laid back feeling and gradually catches up to them in order to help being about dynamic transitions between different sections of the song. In other places the Bass Guitar is very tight with the Rhythm Guitars in order to make a larger sounding overall heavy guitar sound. In some portions of the song the 3 Bass Synth lines and the Bass Guitar are playing in unison, and at other times they are playing distinctly different parts. There are as many as 10 different tracks of Guitars, and all are actual sounds were miked amps, I did not use any direct signals in of themselves. I used different amps, several solid state and a couple of tube amps in conjunction with a digital pedal board patched in the effects loop of some of the amps. Each Guitar track is distinctly different in the way EQ and effects were used, and also how I chose to attack the parts, even while stacking parts exactly in terms of chord forms and notes in order to create a dynamic shift. Some of the distorted Rhythm Guitar Parts are Quadruple Tracked to create a rather large and thick sound with tons of mid range. At other times there are completely different guitar parts going on. At some points it is difficult for the listener to tell the difference between a guitar sound and a synth or keyboard sound. I used a variety of recording techniques along with a great deal of effects and an unconventional approach to using a wah-wah (no funky sounding wah-wah parts here, I used it more like an envelope filter). I was looking for a looser feel combined with a powerful and thick sound, and for this particular piece, I was quite happy with all of the tones. It doesn't really resemble my "signature tone" but it still sounds like me. The Keyboard and Synth parts number well over a dozen tracks. I used a variety of new & old analog and digital Synths, and stayed away from the "normal accepted sounds" as much as possible by using unconventional recording techniques and an unconventional use of effects processors. I was looking to create something new and different, and was not the least concerned with what other "musician critics" had to say. At times I wrote with a keyboard approach in mind, or I thought in terms of a horn section, or a 4 piece string quartet while at other times I thought like a guitarist. Mood and melodic support were the focus, although I strayed form this premise purposefully from time to time. Very little happened in this song by accident in terms of melodic development and the use of sounds, timbers and tones. I also considered how the synthetic sounds would mesh with live instruments. I constantly used melodic development, theme and variation and shifts of instrumentation to build tension and release and add to the dynamic character of this orchestral piece. The Drum parts were very carefully programmed to mimic a real drummer, although I didn't want to use real drums or a real drummer. I was after a combination of a sterile sound of synthetic drums and drum machines with the mentality of a drummer playing a real kit. I was very careful not to program anything in this song that could not be reproduced by a real drummer playing a real drum kit (a very large one.. similar to what Robert Sweet toured with in the late 80's early 90's). |
