The music available here by no means represents what I am looking to do in a band context. This was a musical experiment!!! I recorded these songs when I was without a band and bored. They in no way represent the band "Kung Fu Cricket", the band "Perran" or the range of styles I am capable of writing. |
| Get Wild (In My Dreams) This is the 3rd part of the experimental Heavy Rock/Electronica Project. I wrote all of the music and wrote all of the words, with exception of the bridge, The words to the bridge were written by me and a great singer named Joe Cannon. I sang the verses and chorus's and Joe did an awesome job singing the bridges. Joe and I created the melody lines to the bridge which were inspired by my humming, and he really developed the melodies to the bridge well. I really like the harmonies he came up with and it created the exact contrast I was looking for between my tortured singing and his awesome singing. My tortured singing reflects the angst and frustration of being haunted by a lost love while Joe's reflects somber memories and the desire to recapture what is forever lost. The instrumentation is a mix of electronica, heavy rock, soft melodic music and smooth jazz, depending on what part of the song is going on at the time. The thread that ties them all together is the grove of electronica dance music and the power of heavy metal and hard rock. This whole project was just a musical experiment I conducted a few years back to see what would happen if I combined the affinity I have for hard and heavy rock/metal with many other influences: electronic, techno, dance, R&B, soft rock and jazz. I was going for something different and was really experimenting with different tones, textures and approaches to performing and recording. The Guitar parts vary from really unique & textural parts filled with effects to very heavy distorted tones, some effected, some harmonized to sound lower than they were (although any harmony lines were done with separate performances.. I never used a harmonizer for harmony lines, (just transposing guitar tones for effect) and some absolutely straight pure jazz sounds. I strictly went direct with every guitar signal here, I avoided the use of amps 100%, I was looking for a buzz saw distorted sound that wasn't fuzzy, and also a thick and powerful distortion that was still very tight, and I didn't feel that "air" from a miked amp would give me the desired effect. This is really strange for me to do this because I generally do not favor the exclusive use of direct tones at all, they tend to sound too fuzz box like, but after considerable experimentation, I was able to learn how to control the direct signals in such a way as to still produce a good tone with substance and avoid that 60's fuzzy tone characteristic of so many direct guitar signals. I changed the EQ settings and use of effects for every section of the song to help the dynamic effect I was after as a composer.... I did however use a miked amp for Jeff's lead right before the first bridge and my solo towards the end before the 2nd bridge. These leads still needed to sound "real" to me. The Keyboard parts range from melodic and smooth, to scrappy and big, I used a variety of recording techniques and sound sources, and once again I avoided the "accepted modern sounds" as much as possible. I wasn't looking for realistic string sounds, I wanted that synthetic sound and some of the more aggressive Synth sounds came about by treating them like guitar sounds because I was sometimes using guitar gear with them. The Drums were a combination of a drum part that a real drummer would play using real drums, and several different drum machine parts combined with extensive percussion sounds, both ethnic and artificial ,and somewhat industrial in nature. There is no Bass Guitar anywhere in this song, I didn't want any here. I went for a variety of stacked Bass tones and timbers. I was looking for a combination of totally sterile tones and warm sounds. Sometimes I went for a strict machine feel, and other times I went with a human feel, using artificial sounds. I liked the results. This song itself is about the torment of a lost love (some people thought it was about sex, but its not). Sex has absolutely nothing to so with this tune. Get Wild the song, refers to these incredibly painful dreams I had about a girl I fell in love when I was a young man in Nashville some years back, (lets just call her "Nashville Amy"). The part of the lyrics "Get Wild With Me" refers to me wondering if "Nashville Amy" was being haunted like I was... meaning wanting something you can never have again. It was basically an "invitation" to join in on the painful experiences I was having in a series of very vivid and painful dreams/nightmares. We were both young and neither of us were equipped for true love...... a selfless love. We ended up hurting each other as much as we loved each other, and is just another one of the endless tragic stories about a failed relationship and the pain that accompanies such an experience. |
